3PL
Third-party logistics — outsourcing warehousing, inventory handling and dispatch to an operator instead of running your own facility. A 3PL provider receives stock, stores it, picks and packs orders and ships them.
C&F agent
A clearing and forwarding agent who handles customs clearance and freight on behalf of importers and exporters.
GST on rent
Warehouse and storage rent is generally a taxable service in India, invoiced with GST at the rate applicable to the service and recipient.
Grade A warehouse
A modern, purpose-built facility with high clear height, wide bays, proper dock levellers, fire safety systems, and usually located on a highway-connected logistics park.
Bonded warehouse
A licensed warehouse where imported goods can be stored without paying customs duty until they are cleared for home consumption or re-export.
Built-up area
The total floor area including walls and shared space. Always confirm whether a quoted rate is for carpet area or built-up area.
Carpet area
The usable floor area within walls, excluding common areas — the number that matters when comparing warehouse or storage space.
Clear height
The usable vertical distance from the floor to the lowest obstruction (roof, beam, sprinkler) — it determines how many racking tiers fit.
Cold chain
Temperature-controlled storage and transport for perishable or temperature-sensitive goods such as food, pharma and flowers.
Floor load
The weight a warehouse floor can carry per square metre. Heavy machinery and dense pallet storage need a higher floor load rating.
Fulfilment centre
A warehouse set up specifically to pick, pack and dispatch e-commerce orders, usually connected to marketplaces and courier networks.
Godown
The everyday Indian term for a storage building. Typically simpler than a modern warehouse, and the word most traders use for practical, secure storage space.
In-city warehousing
Warehouse space inside or at the edge of a city, used for last-mile distribution so orders reach customers faster.
Last-mile delivery
The final leg of delivery from the warehouse to the customer's door — usually the most expensive part of the chain, which is why in-city storage reduces cost.
Loading dock
A raised platform where trucks reverse to load and unload at the same height as the vehicle floor, which speeds up handling and reduces damage.
Lock-in period
The minimum period you are contractually committed to pay for, even if you leave earlier. Monthly, no-lock-in billing is what makes flexible storage possible.
Mezzanine floor
An intermediate floor built inside a warehouse to create extra storage or office space above the ground level.
On-demand warehousing
Warehouse space taken for a short, flexible period — weeks or months rather than years — instead of a long lease. Suits seasonal peaks, new product launches and overflow stock.
Pallet
A flat platform (usually 1200 × 1000 mm in India) on which goods are stacked so a forklift can move them as one unit. Pallet storage is priced per pallet position rather than per square foot.
Racking
Steel shelving systems that let a warehouse store goods vertically in tiers, increasing usable capacity without expanding the floor area.
Self storage
A storage unit rented by a household or business for its own goods, with its own lock and access — as opposed to a shared, warehouse-operator-managed store. Sizes are usually described in square feet (25 sq ft upward).
Warehouse
A large building used to store goods, usually with loading docks, higher clear height, fire safety systems and structured access. In India the word covers everything from a simple shed to a Grade A facility.
